Marvel Preview Review for October Part 1 of 3

Jim: Lee gets upset because I’m just ragging on Marvel like there is no tomorrow, but let me tell you something when they can get an interesting month together maybe I’ll stop.
Greg: Jim’s just mad he didn’t think of Vampire Wolverine first.
Lee: I gave picks up because it just got to me. Let’s see what you have to say after you burn out next year.

Tron: The Betrayal #1 (of 2)
Written by Jai Nitz
Plot courtesy Starlight Runner Entertainment
Penciled by Andie Tong Cover by Salvador Larroca
Get a first look at the world of the upcoming Tron: Legacy! Following the events of the original Tron, the year is 1983 and Kevin Flynn is now in charge of Encom. He’s built it into the largest videogame company in the world. But that’s not all Kevin has accomplished – he’s also secretly built the Grid, a digital world filled with living programs! More than a place where he can race light cycles, it’s a place where he can build and test environments only limited by his imagination. But the Grid is far more complex than even its creator realizes, and even Flynn can’t be in two places at once. As this new world develops a life of its own, Flynn is going to first need the help of an old friend, a security program named Tron. Showcasing a key time of the mythology of the Tron world, part one of The Betrayal will show the early days of the Grid, and the first appearances of the heroes and villains that will be seen in Tron: Legacy. 56 Pages/$4.99
Jim: Marvel’s first Disney book. I never understood the appeal of Tron and believe the concept has aged poorly. I wish someone would do a new story instead of always reaching backwards.
Greg: That is an AWESOME name for a main character.
Lee: You never understood Tron because you were just too old! I won’t go back and watch the movie because I’m positive that it can’t be anywhere near as good as I remember it. But, this does have a certain amount of nostalgic appeal. I won’t bash it until I see it.

UNCANNY X-FORCE #1
Written by Rick Remender Pencils by Jerome Opeña Cover by Esad Ribic Blank Cover also available Variant Covers by Marko Djurdjevic, Clayton Crain, Rob Liefeld
“AGES,” PART 1 Wolverine promised Cyclops that X-Force would disband -- he lied. A secret society has resurrected En Sabah Nur, putting into motion events that will turn this age of heroes into an Age of Apocalypse! To hold them back, Wolverine and Archangel bring together Fantomex, Deadpool, and Psylocke to form The Uncanny X-Force! Stained by their history, they are the only ones capable of making the hard resolutions necessary. A band of likeminded friends and mercenaries set to one purpose, one big ugly task -- kill Apocalypse by any means. 32 PGS./ $3.99
Jim: Except for Deadpool being on the team, it’s hard to not like this book with this creative team. It was all set-up well at the end of second coming and I will checking out this baby. The $4 price tag irks me, but hey.
Greg: Hey! A different adjective! Uncanny is the new New! The premise of this book sounds completely stupid, but that is an amazing creative team and a cast that I think Remender could do a lot of good stuff with. Worth a look solely on the strength of the creative team.
Lee: WOW! I never thought I’d see the day Greg called a Marvel book stupid. But, he’s still buying it. Ya gotta love Marvel VOZ’s. (Victims of Zombification because the word Zombie could be seen as degrading)

CARNAGE #1 (of 5)
Written by Zeb Wells Pencils & Cover by Clayton Crain
Variant Cover by Clayton Crain, Arthur Adams
CARNAGE IS BACK! The fan-favorite villain returns to rock the Marvel Universe, with the Amazing Spider-Man and the Invincible Iron Man first on his hit list. But just why – and how – has Carnage returned, and how many of Marvel's heroes will it take to stop him? Superstar creators Zeb Wells and Clayton Crain team up for the Spider-Man epic that’ll leave jaws on the floor! Literally! 32 PGS./ $3.99
Jim: Again let’s revisit past hits. I will have to pass even with Zeb Wells writing it as he has taken some lame concepts and made them work before.
Greg: Again, stupid premise and a good … well half a good creative team. Wells does a great job with all his stuff, even the stuff that seems like a bit of a poisoned well (remember Heroes for Hire?), but Crain is an artist that puts me off. His art is too murky and I get the feeling he either ignores his scripts or isn’t able to deal with the latitude his creators give him. Pass.
Lee: HOLY CRAP! Greg is passing on a book? This from the man who loves Frankencastle. I’m pretty sure the world is about to end.
Greg: Keep making jokes. I get to read books about Frank Castle as a zombie cyborg riding a dragon and killing zombie nazis. You read books with the same artist who did Cannibal Corpse's album covers ... which isn't really that different... huh.

PROMETHEUS #1 (of 3)
Written, Pencils, Cover, & Variant Cover by Cristophe Bec

From European master Cristophe Bec comes this extraordinary story. A series of completely inexplicable events are afflicting our world, day after day at precisely 13 hours and 13 minutes. September 21, 2019 — 13h13m: The space shuttle Atlantis disappears without a trace from control screens, completely lost to NASA ground control. September 22, 2019 —13h13m: All timepieces on the planet suddenly stop. And that’s just a beginning... as the threat of the Apocalypse hangs over the entire planet, the future of Humanity is plunged into darkness and obscurity… heralding the worst for our civilization. 48 PGS./ $5.99
Jim; One of Marvel’s reprint’s from Europe and I love the concept. I almost rather wait for the trade but I may pick up the three single issues.
Greg: I’m always game to give Manga a try, but European comics generally leave me cold. Still, sounds interesting. I’ll give it a shot.
Lee: Excuse me? Euro comics leave you cold???? Heresy I say! That’s it, we’re treating you like we treat all heretics! BURN BURNED AT THE STAKE.

Not liking Euro comics… come on now.

ULTIMATE COMICS THOR #1 (of 4)
Written by Jonathan Hickman Pencils & Cover by Carlos Pacheco Villain Variant by Mike Choi
Don't miss the superstar team-up of Jonathan Hickman and Carlos Pacheco as they go back to the beginning and tell the origin of Thor, Loki and the rest of Asgard! Ragnorak has descended and Asgard sits at the edge of the end. What will become of Thor and the Warriors Three? And what exactly does Baron Zemo, mysterious commander for the Nazis, have to do with it all? Ultimate Comics Thor brings you the untold story of Thor’s thunderous debut! 32 PGS./ $3.99
Jim: I was initially a big Jonathan Hickman fan and lately I have dropped all of his titles. He has some terrific concepts and ideas, but likes the skill to actually execute against them. I just wish Marvel would get some Thor titles out with the movie coming out next year. (We need a sarcasm font).
Greg: Its nice to see that we’re finally injecting some proper up and coming creators into this imprint. I fully expect 4 issues of Thor wrecking dudes and obscure philosophy. Oh Jonathan Hickman, please make this more like your current arc on Secret Warriors and not your last arc.
Lee: Yeeks! Way to much Hickman doubt here. Hickman has enough crazy ideas that this just might work. This is his last chance for me. But, what's really selling me is Pacheco drawing Thor. This will be a book of super pretty pictures, I just hope the story can keep up.

SPIDER-MAN VS. VAMPIRES #1
Written by Kevin Grevioux Penciled by Roberto Castro Cover by Chad Hardin
VAMPIRES! You can’t trust them, even when they’re on your side. From the pages of Marvel Digital, Spider-Man’s had a long history with Blade, the Vampire hunter, but when he finds him enslaved in an underground, undead fighting league, the web-head must fight Blade for his very life – or face the curse of the Vampire! 32 PGS./ One-Shot/ $3.99
Jim: This is probably the tip of the iceberg as the vampires bleed all over the MU in the months to come. It is almost like a virus that is going to infect the entire MU. Blechh.
Greg: And its written by the guy who created the Underworld movies. I hope everyone is wondering how Spidey looks in leather.
Lee: I don’t know how SpiderMAN looks in leather but I can tell you how SpiderWOMAN looks in leather…. Oh yeah baby, it’s nice.

AVENGERS VS. PET AVENGERS #1 (of 4)
Written by Chris Eliopoulos Pencils & Cover by Ig Guara Basic
Truth: It’s very hard to protect the earth when you’ve been turned into a frog. The Pet Avengers Return! Good thing, too, cuz dragons have decided that it’s time to take over the world and oppress the silly humans once and for all!!! And since Captain America, Iron Man & Thor are all green and hopping about, here’s hoping they can get used to their new flippers in time to fight alongside Earth’s Mightiest Pets! 40 PGS./ $3.99
Jim: This just screams funny, but not for four issues. As a one shot I would be all over this book.
Greg: Every review of this Pet Avengers stuff has been glowing. Sure, I’ll give it a go.
Lee: Pet Avengers is excellent. Just like the Franklin Richards book. Odd how that happens when they are written by the same person. It’s very, very good.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #611
Written by Ed Brubaker Penciled by Butch Guice
Cover by Marko Djurdjevic
Vampire Variant by Gerald Parel
The Trial of Captain America begins here! Nothing will ever be the same again, and this time we mean it. Award-winning writer Ed Brubaker and acclaimed artist Butch Guice continue to take Captain America to new heights! 40 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99
Jim: Even the hype writings know that they have said this so often no one believes it so they try to double sell it. Oh yeah we have lied before, like 500 times, but this time, this time we really mean it. Still a good series and this arc is looking interesting.
Greg: Imagine that, hype from a Marvel solicit. What would Stan Lee think? For the second story arc in a row, Brubaker has an idea that is at once brilliant, and so blindly obvious once you see it, you can’t believe you weren’t expecting this storyline for months. I’m really looking forward to this.
Lee: Maybe they will shoot Bucky at the end and we can start the whole mess over again. I’m glad one person is excited about this.
